The Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) have published guidance for  environmental claims on goods and services.

Published on the 20th September, this guidance has been created to help businesses understand and comply with existing obligations under consumer protection law when making environmental claims. Additionally, the guidance sets out principles which are designed to help businesses comply with the law; it explains each of these principles. It also gives examples of how each of the principles applies and more detailed case studies where multiple apply. The guidance also sets out the legal framework on which these principles are based.

The principles are:

  • claims must be truthful and accurate
  • claims must be clear and unambiguous
  • claims must not omit or hide important relevant information
  • comparisons must be fair and meaningful
  • claims must consider the full life cycle of the product or service
  • claims must be substantiated
